Well sort of.

After the recent amount of worrying I’ve been doing recently over my career, I decided to depress myself even more by looking into how much getting my own kit in would cost. After talking to a few people, I’ve decided upon getting a Canon 550D from ebay, for around £350, which is actually is good value (for those not in the know). Of course, buying a range of lenses to get the right shots would cost around the same, so a complete camera kit would be around £600, which will take some saving. And that’s before I’ve even looked at sound.

What really was worrying me was the cost of editing software. It works out cheaper for me to buy a MacBook and a copy of Final Cut 7 than bring in a fully licenses version of Avid, which my current laptop wouldn’t be able to handle too well. However, either way, I can’t really afford, certainly not for a while. Being a freelancer at this stage seems like the chicken and the egg to me. I can’t get work until I have the kit, and can’t afford the kit until I have work.

Surprise twist though, after doing a little research, I’ve discovered a great editing platform that’s really cost effective; Sony Vegas. If your just starting out, I really recommend you at least download the trial version. While it’s taking me a while to get used to yet another programme, I’m hoping to get some good results out of it. And the current version I’m using (Sony Vegas HD Platinum 11) only costs around £70. While it isn’t as good as the Pro Version (£450 still very good value), I think it’s perfect for online and small ameatur productions. Dismiss it’s lack of reputation compared to the current editing heavy hitters (FCP, Avid, Prem Pro), it’s just not been around as long. Plus, it edits 3D, and while I’m not shooting in 3D, for £70, why not just have it as a bonus eh?

Too many dvds?

Too many dvds?

Just posting an embed of a link I posted earlier. The most recent production I’ve been working on.

But I can’t because I’m trying to quit. But working on set (and at the club) makes the temptation even greater. And don’t get me started on the price of patches. I don’t want to get started about that mostly because of the perception I’m tight, and only furthering the Yorkshiremen stereotype, which is a great stereotype as far as stereotypes go, but all the same, lets not start.

Just me, and my crew

As I’m not playing on my Xbox, or watching a wrestling DVD, and actually bothering to update my iPod, why don’t I enlighten you to the musical choices I’ve made while writing.

So after meeting with a director + producer for a short student film shooting in Leeds, and being offered the lead editor position, I’ve decided to take time off from work experience, that I’ve mentioned briefly, in Manchester.

It comes down to what I posted about before, and feel that working on ‘Seeking’ (that’s what the short is called by the way) will help me get things sorted. It’s on a much smaller scale than The Endz (the production I was working on in Manchester), and hopefully a lot more hands on with a lot more responsibility.

Chris, the director of the Endz has been understanding enough to let me take sometime off getting The Endz series one finished to go work on Seeking. Shooting starts this coming Saturday, and I’ll probally post about how it’s going, and if it’s helping with my recent career issues.

But before I start work on Seeking, I’ve got to help the University of Huddersfield launch their own SUTV programme.

After struggling all night trying to get a rough script to work from, all that’s left is to see if it all comes together and we produce a great advert to hoepfully get some actual students interested, rather than us graduates who have issues moving on. That isn’t true but I couldn’t blame my ex-tutors thinking I actually did have issues. At the moment I have two projects going on for the University. It would have been three, but I looks like a parody of the Huddersfield McD’s advert I was asked to do is more than likely not going to happen now.

I suppose I did leave it too long to get set up and now it’s become irrelevant.

Those who’ve lived in Huddersfield will understand why this makes no sense.

Well these things happen, and I have been busy. I wasn’t the only one working on the project, so someone else could have taken the cart and ran with it, but never seems like anyone else does.

I think I’ve gone on long enough. I can’t think of anything to post all week, and then I rant on a Monday.

P.s. What is with all these University based memes recently?

So this past week I’ve been thinking I need to re-think what I want to be in the future, what job do I want in the media? Working in Manchester, I think I’ve been a little too generous with those doing work experience from the job centre, and feel that I should be getting more hands on camera time. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not the type to look out for myself and myself alone, but I think this lack of hands on work has caused a loss of focus and direction that I need to get back.

I think ultimately, I want to be involved in content making, to have a job that impacts what the audience sees. I know there are roles that are important to the media that the audience doesn’t see, but that’s not for me. That’s why I’ve been trying my hand at script writing.

Guy #2: Hey, getting some writing done there buddy? Guy #1: Yeah, setting up in public so everybody can watch me type my big screenplay. Guy #2: Me too. All real writers need to be seen writing otherwise what’s the point, right? Guy #1: You should totally write that down! Guy #2: Okay, will you watch me?

No I’m not actually like that, I tend to stay up late in the living room and do a block of it once every few weeks. Anyway, like I was saying I think am losing focus. While it is good to be able to do many things in television, you also have to specialise and looking over my CV, I don’t see much of a pattern to my work experience, perhaps that’s why I never get replies from job applications.

Anyway, last night I did a bit of googling, and found an opportunity that I feel may be what I need.

However, it is quite expensive, and my parents have tried to squash the idea already, all based on the price. I guess, they are right in many ways, but what’s involved with the intern-ship sounds just right for me, will help me figure out what I want to end up doing, plus will help sort out my CV. I’ll go brain storm ways to get around the money issue, talk to some friends that have been travelling.

Meeting up with some students from Leeds Uni tomorrow after applying to an editing position on Mandy.com. While again, this may mess up my CV just a little more, the fact it’s a small student film will probably help me get more hands on experience in the whole process, plus it’s going to be submitted to festivals, which is a win in my opinion.
